Porcelain Veneers are the most popular and successful smile restoration method with our cosmetic dentistry patients. Veneers create a very life-like tooth appearance and can lengthen, straighten, and whiten your teeth to create a beautiful, symmetrical smile as well as correct your bite to make a comfortable smile that will affect your other facial features, possibly reducing wrinkles, frown furrows, and a clenched, stress appearance.
Veneers are thin, strong, custom designed porcelain restorations that are bonded to prepared teeth. Teeth are prepared by first taking care of health remedial work, such as, cavities filled, periodontal work, or teeth cleaning. Then the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. About a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed. This may require a local anesthetic. A mold is taken of the teeth. This is sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers. Once the custom porcelain veneers are fabricated, they are tested for fit. While the veneers are resting on your teeth you are able to view the aesthetic results. Pay particular attention to the color at this last opportunity to adjust the color veneer with the shade of the cement used. To permanently bond the veneers, the tooth is cleansed with specific chemicals, special cement is sandwiched between the veneer and tooth, and a light beam initiates the release of a catalyst that hardens the cement.
Porcelain veneers have an aesthetic advantage over other materials because they are glass-like. The surface is extremely smooth and impervious so they will not pick up permanent stains. Another great advantage over other types of cosmetic dental bonding is the fact that they are translucent. The porcelain reflects light the way a tooth does. When light strikes a tooth's surface it is not immediately reflected off, but instead penetrates into the thickness of the enamel and is reflected off the non-translucent tooth structure that lies beneath the enamel. This gives it depth. The porcelain veneers imitate this light handling characteristic teeth.
Porcelain veneers cannot be utilized in every situation. Dr. Jiveh can determine if porcelain veneers are an appropriate method to make the changes you desire. If they are not for your particular case, He will be able to suggest other treatment options that are suitable.
